Korn is an alternative metal or nu metal band that comes from
Bakersfield, Ca. The band got its start in 1993 when the band L.A.P.D. called it quits due to there singer Richard Morasses’ drug addiction. They released there first demo album Neidermeyers Mind soon after their formation in 1993. Then in 1994 they launched there first album titled Korn. There fist album and tour had had no publicity whatsoever from the media or the radio the band relied on giving the audience what they wanted providing them with good music and awesome performances. There dedicated audience help Korn achieve #72 on Billboard 200 in 1996 with Shoots and Ladder.
Korns second album debuted October 15, 1996 this time their album publicity was obtained by opening up for the band Metallica the rest was internet publicity. Life is peachy was their first well known hit album selling 106,000 copies in its first week and hitting #3 on the billboard 200. Life is peachy had great hits like Porno Creep, No Place to Hide, Swallow. In 11997 Korn performed in the Lallapaloousa festival Co-heading it along with Tool. The band ended up dropping out after band member Shaffer was diagnosed with viral meningitis. The few appearances they were able to do while at the festival caught the attention of many rock loving fans expanding korns fan base.
Later in 1997 Korn decided to create there own record label and called it Elementree Records. Their record company signed on bands like Orgy, Videodrone and rappers like Marz and Deadzy. So by 1998 when they released their third album Follow the Leader it was no longer under Immortal/Epic Records but their own label Elementree. For the album Follow the Leader Korn came out with a show called Korn TV the band used the internet to deliver the show to all its fans. The Show featured the making of there new album and featured guest celebrities and if that wasn’t enough to get fans hooked they also took phone calls from fans to answer any questions and receive feedback. The show allowed the fans to really get connected with the band. When the album debuted it appeared #1 on the billboard selling 268,000 copies. Their songs Got the Life and Freak on a Leash gained such popularity that they both had to be retired from the show Total Request Live from MTV. Got the Life made history on the show by being the first retired video ever. Till this day Follow the Leader has been Korns most successful album being nominated and receiving countless awards and going platinum 5 times by selling over 10 million records world wide
In 1999 Korn released another hit Issues. Issues sold over 573,000copies in its first week earning #1 on Billboard 100. Korn decided to thank their fans by performing their entire album at the Apollo Theater. The performance was also broadcasted on the radio. In 2002 Korn reemerged with there new album Untouchables. Korn and its fans were thrilled about the new album which featured new electric beats and various new guitars and instruments never before used in any other album giving the album a twist. the albums sells were not as expected selling only 434,000 copies. The band has stated they believe the sales where low due to piracy and the fact the album leaked through the internet three months before its release.
In July 22,2003 Korn released Did My Time a single for the movie Tomb Raider which gave them a gramy nomination for Best Metal Performance. On October 2004 Korn released there album Greatest Hits #1. The album sold over 129,000 copies and debuted #4 on Billboard 100. Their album included a remix of Freak on a Leash and Word Up. In 2005 Brian Welch decided to leave the band to pursue the Lord. Though this was a significant loss for Korn they preceded to start work on their new record See you on the Other Side This album featured such hits like Twisted Transistors and Coming Undone. In 2007 Korn released their untitled album which sold well over 123,000 copies and has been certified Gold. This was now done under the record label of Virgin after completing there contract with Sony. The contract with Virgin Records was for two years. Virgin Paid Korn 25 Million in exchange of a share in profits for their following two albums including tours and merchandising. Virgin also received 30 percent in licensing and ticket sales.
Since 2007 Korn has kept busy doing several tours and concerts.
Just recently Korn has released their newest album Korn 3 Remember Who You Are. After almost two decades Korns popularity with the public remains strong. Korn is one of the few bands that has been able to achieve such success after all there still going strong.
