Korn is an alternative metal or nu metal band that comes from Bakersfield, Ca. The band got its start in 1993 when the band L.A.P.D. called it quits due to there singer Richard Morasses’ drug addiction. They released there first demo album Neidermeyers Mind soon after their formation in 1993. Then in 1994 they launched there first album titled Korn. There fist album and tour had had no publicity whatsoever from the media or the radio the band relied on giving the audience what they wanted providing them with good music and awesome performances. There dedicated audience help Korn achieve #72 on Billboard 200 in 1996 with Shoots and Ladder.

Korns second album debuted October 15, 1996 this time their album publicity was obtained by opening up for the band Metallica the rest was internet publicity. Life is peachy was their first well known hit album selling 106,000 copies in its first week and hitting #3 on the billboard 200. Life is peachy had great hits like Porno Creep, No Place to Hide, Swallow. In 11997 Korn performed in the Lallapaloousa festival Co-heading it along with Tool. The band ended up dropping out after band member Shaffer was diagnosed with viral meningitis. The few appearances they were able to do while at the festival caught the attention of many rock loving fans expanding korns fan base.

Later in 1997 Korn decided to create there own record label and called it Elementree Records. Their record company signed on bands like Orgy, Videodrone and rappers like Marz and Deadzy. So by 1998 when they released their third album Follow the Leader it was no longer under Immortal/Epic Records but their own label Elementree. For the album Follow the Leader Korn came out with a show called Korn TV the band used the internet to deliver the show to all its fans. The Show featured the making of there new album and featured guest celebrities and if that wasn’t enough to get fans hooked they also took phone calls from fans to answer any questions and receive feedback. The show allowed the fans to really get connected with the band. When the album debuted it appeared #1 on the billboard selling 268,000 copies. Their songs Got the Life and Freak on a Leash gained such popularity that they both had to be retired from the show Total Request Live from MTV. Got the Life made history on the show by being the first retired video ever. Till this day Follow the Leader has been Korns most successful album being nominated and receiving countless awards and going platinum 5 times by selling over 10 million records world wide

In 1999 Korn released another hit Issues. Issues sold over 573,000copies in its first week earning #1 on Billboard 100. Korn decided to thank their fans by performing their entire album at the Apollo Theater. The performance was also broadcasted on the radio. In 2002 Korn reemerged with there new album Untouchables. Korn and its fans were thrilled about the new album which featured new electric beats and various new guitars and instruments never before used in any other album giving the album a twist. the albums sells were not as expected selling only 434,000 copies. The band has stated they believe the sales where low due to piracy and the fact the album leaked through the internet three months before its release.

In July 22,2003 Korn released Did My Time a single for the movie Tomb Raider which gave them a gramy nomination for Best Metal Performance. On October 2004 Korn released there album Greatest Hits #1. The album sold over 129,000 copies and debuted #4 on Billboard 100. Their album included a remix of Freak on a Leash and Word Up. In 2005 Brian Welch decided to leave the band to pursue the Lord. Though this was a significant loss for Korn they preceded to start work on their new record See you on the Other Side This album featured such hits like Twisted Transistors and Coming Undone. In 2007 Korn released their untitled album which sold well over 123,000 copies and has been certified Gold. This was now done under the record label of Virgin after completing there contract with Sony. The contract with Virgin Records was for two years. Virgin Paid Korn 25 Million in exchange of a share in profits for their following two albums including tours and merchandising. Virgin also received 30 percent in licensing and ticket sales.

Since 2007 Korn has kept busy doing several tours and concerts. Just recently Korn has released their newest album Korn 3 Remember Who You Are. After almost two decades Korns popularity with the public remains strong. Korn is one of the few bands that has been able to achieve such success after all there still going strong.

Betty Page known as the pin up queen was born on April 22, 1923 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her parents were Walter Roy and Edna Mae Pirtle. Betty had one older sister and one younger sister. Childhood was not easy at all for Betty and her sisters. Her parents divorced in 1933 and in 1936 her father was imprisoned Betty later accused her father of molesting her. Betty and her sisters were separated from their mother and taken to an orphanage in which they stayed for a year. In the orphan they learned different skills to help them later in life. One of the skills learned was sewing which helped Betty in designing her future outfits. Despite all the drama in her life Betty was a very bright student in High School she got good grades and was voted most likely to succeed. After graduating from Hume- Fog- High School with a scholarship she enrolled in George Pea Boy Collage with the hope of becoming a teacher. After a year in collage her goals changed and she decided to peruse acting. In 1944 she graduated with a Bachelor of art degree. Prior to her graduation in 1943 she married her first husband Billy Neal shortly before he was drafted into the US Navy for World War 2. There marriage didn’t last she divorced in 1947.

Soon after her divorce Betty moved to New York to peruse her acting carrier where she worked as a secretary. It was in 1950 when police officer Jerry Tibs who enjoyed photography noticed Betty walking on the beach in Coney Island New York during her break. He asked if she would be interested in taking pin up pictures she agreed to it and that’s how her first pin up portfolio was put together. Soon after this Betty entered the field of glamour photography where she became a popular camera club model working with photographer Cass Carr. Her lack of inhibition in posing made her a hit. Her name and image appeared in then popular men’s magazines Wink, Titter, Eyefull, and beauty parade.

In 1952 and through the rest of her carrier she worked with Irving-Klaw for mail ordering photography with pin up, bondage or sadomasochistic themes making her the first bondage model. Klaw also used Betty in dozens of short black and white specialty films which catered to specific requests from his clients. These silent films showed woman clad in lingerie and high heels acting out fetishistic scenarios of abduction, domination and slave- training with bondage elaborate leather costumes and restraints. Klaws best selling picture of Betty comes from the film Leopard Bikini Bound this picture features Betty gagged and bound in a web of ropes. Even thought these underground features had the same crude style and clandestine distribution as the pornographic stage films of the time, Klaws all female films and still photos displayed no nudity or explicit sexual content. This is why Betty is considered a sex symbol and a model and never a porn star.

In 1953 Betty attended acting classes at the Herbert Berghof Studio this led to several roles on stage and television. Two big appearances for her were on the shows United States Steel Hour and The Jackie Gleason Show. She also did Off Broadway productions like life is a Thief and Sunday Costs Five Pesos. She also acted and danced in the film Striperama by Jerald Intrator she was also given a brief speaking role this is the only time her voice was ever captured on film.

In 1954 Hugh Hefner received some photo shots of Betty Page called The Jungle Bettie photographs. The photo Shoot took place in the wild life park Africa USA in Boca Raton, Florida. In this specific photo shoot Betty took pictures with two cheetahs Moja and Mibili completely undressed. Her beauty and other pictures taken there caught his attention and he decided to schedule a photo shoot. In 1955 Hugh Hefner decided to make Betty Playmate of the Month her picture was put on the center fold of January’s issue. Later that year she won the title Miss Pin Up of the World. She also became known as the Queen of Curves and The Dark Angel.

Her success didn’t last much after 1956 since she retired in 1958 when she took interest in Christianity. Her career didn’t only come to an end but so did her spot light. Betty isolated herself from any press and dedicated her life to the Christian community by working full time with Christian organizations. Though little is known about Betty after her sudden disappearance it is known she married to Armond Walterson in 1958 and divorced him in 1963. She also remarried first husband Bill Neal this helped her out in entering missionary work in which she had been denied due to her divorce to him. There second marriage didn’t last long they divorced shortly after getting married. After her divorce she returned to Florida in 1967 and married Harry Lear but divorced him in 1972. It seems like Betty just couldn’t keep a steady relationship.

In 1976 Betty started to gain popularity once again when Eros Publishing co. published A Nostalgic Look at Betty Page. Private Peeks, reprinting pictures of the private camera club sessions which reintroduced Page to a new line of fans. Betty went unaware of her new fame for years . During these years she would struggle with financial and emotional problems. It was 1979 and Betty was living in Southern California when she was arrested for having an altercation with her landlady after having a nervous breakdown. Betty was diagnosed with acute Schizophrenia and spent 20 months in a California state mental hospital in San Bernardino. Soon after her release she was once again arrested for the same thing with the exception of facing charges of assault in which she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and placed under state supervision for 8 years. She was released in 1992.

In 1993 Betty spoke with Robin Leach the host of Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous. She told her how she was unaware of her comeback and explained her financial problems. Soon after the interview she spoke with agent James Swanson to help her manage and collect her royalty payments but after seeing no money for three years she fired him and signed with Curtis Management Group. After signing with them her finical situation was secured. Betty had caught the attention of the media during the 90s books where made about her and her lost years. Her story came out on E True Hollywood Story she had several interviews all in which she refused to show her face and body so they were blurred out. Betty said the reason for her not wanting to be shown publically was her old age she rather the public remember her when she was thin and young. The only picture Betty allowed to get taken of her for publicity was in 2003 for Playboy.

On December 6, 2008 Betty was hospitalized in critical condition some said it was a heart attack others say it was a pneumonia. Betty went into coma and had to be put on life support. Her family decided to disconnect her on December 18, 2008 and died shortly after

Marley started to pursue a music career around the age of fourteen by dropping out of school. This was a hard career to pursue because around the time there were very many young men following the same dream. His fist attempt was not very successful his songs “Judge Not” and “One more cup of Coffee” didn’t do well with the public but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream. A year later n 1963 he joined a band made up of six people himself, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Cherry Smith, Beverly kelso and his good friend Bunny wailer. The group named themselves The Teenagers there music genre was Ska and Rock Steady. There name went through several name changes until they finally decided to stick to The Wailers name that stuck with them until the end of their music carrier. In 1966 Junior Braithwaite, Beverly kelso, Cherry Smith decide to leave the group. This was also the year Marley married his wife Rita Anderson and moved near his mother in Wilmington Delaware for a short time. When he returned to Jamaica he became a Rastafarian and that’s when he began to grow his ever so famous dread locks. This is also the time The Wailers teamed up with the group The Up setters. Though their alliance lasted only about a year many people believe this is when the best music that came from either of these groups. In 1973 the Wailers released there first album called Catch a Fire. This album was released world wide and sold very well. That same year they released their second album Burnin which included the really popular songs I Shot the Sheriff and Get Up Stand up. These two albums allowed The Wailers to gain more recognition world wide. Unfortunately The Wailers broke up in 1974 each of the three went their own way musically.

After their break up Marley continued his music carrier he created a band with him as the lead singer and ten others to do a key board, guitar, drums, bass. Part of what made up the ten band members was his wife Rita that did the backing vocals with another two Judy and Marcia. The bands name was Bob Marley and the Wailers. In 1975 the band had their fist international breakthrough outside of Jamaica with No Woman No Cry. Following the success came their album Rastaman Vibrations. The release of this album caught the attention of America. This album was released in 1976 and was on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks.

In the mist of his fame and just a few days before a concert (Smile Jamaica) Bob, Rita, and manager Michel were wounded by gunmen inside of Bobs home. Marleys wife Rita and manager Michel were badly injuredMarley just had minor wounds to the chest and arm. Despite his wounds and the condition of his wife and his managerMarley still performed as scheduled. The crime was thought to come from a rival political group that was against Marley’s Rastafarian beliefs.

Towards the end of 1976 Marley left Jamaica to go to England where he did two years of self imposed exile. Within these two year he came out with two albums Exodus and Kaya. These albums did really well in England. So well that Exodus stayed On the British album chart for 56 consecutive weeks. The album Exodus featured the songs One Love, Jammin, and Exodus. In 1978 he returned back to Jamaica to perform at another political concert The One Love Peace Concert. It was at this concert towards the end of Marley’s Performance that Edward seaga (leader of opposing Jamaica labor party) and Michel Manley (leader of then ruling people’s national party) shook hands to show signs of peace. This was all done to Marley’s request.

It was July 1977 when Marley was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma which is a form of malignant melanoma. Despite his illness he continued recording and performing. In the spring of 1980 he released the album Uprising. Following the album was a long concert tour that took place in Europe in 1980. On of the concert was played in front of a hundred thousand people in Milan. Soon after his tour he came to America where he did two performances at Madison Square Garden. More performances were scheduled to take place but Marley’s health got worse and had to be hospitalized. Once in the hospital he received the worst news possible. The cancer had spread throughout his body. He received treatment in the Bavarian clinic of Josef Issels. After eight months of treatment and no improvement he decided to stop and return to Jamaica. While on his flight his condition worsened. They ended up stopping in Miami, Florida where he was taken to Cedars of Lebanon Hospital for immediate care. On the morning of May 11, 1981 Marley was pronounced dead. The cause was the spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain. On May 21, 1981 Marley received a funeral with elements from both Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafarian tradition.

Though Bob Marley’s body now rests in peace the world continues to recognize his incredible talent. In 1994 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In1999 Time Magazines chose his album Exodus as best album of the 20th century. In 2002 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Most recently in 2006 the city of New York changed a portion of Church Ave. into Bob Marley Boulevard. Its hard to think of another musician that can continue obtaining so much recognition and love from fans. Some of these fans got to experience his power as a performer and others simply get inspiration through his music and life witch sent a wonderful message of peace and love.

When you think heavy metal music I’m sure one of the bands that come to mind is slipknot. Slipknot is one of the best heavy metal bands out right now. They have got it down from their music to their performances to their presentation slipknot has got it all. Slipknot got their start in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa but before they got filthy famous they under went several line up changes and band name changes. Their first name was Painface, The Pale Ones, Meld, and in 1996 the band renamed themselves as Slipknot. Slipknot was a song on their first demo that was released on October 31, 1996 Mate, Feed, Kill; Repeat science then the band has not changed names. In 1996 the band also started experimenting with their image by putting on makeup which eventually led to their anti-image of wearing masks. In 1999 Slipknot gained enormous popularity and attended the Ozzfest in March. Their second album release Slipknot soon followed on June 29, 1999. The album Slipknot soon reached platinum early in the year 2000. This was a first for their record label Road Runner Records. Slipknot had gained immense popularity. On May 24, 2009 Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses) was released and peaked at #2 on billboard 200. Their fist live album was released in November 2005 this album reached #17 on billboard 200. The following year the band won their first and only Grammy for best metal performance with “Before I Forget”. Slipknots latest release was their fourth studio album All hope is Gone released on August 20, 2008. This was their first album to be #1 on billboard 200. This album has sold almost 900,000 copies in the U.S alone. The band and producers really put a lot of hard work into this album which featured an expansion of trash metal, acoustic guitars, melodic vocals, and the introduction of hi hats and symbols. Preparations started on October 2006, it took over 2 years of work to release this rocking album it is no wonder it was such a hit. The album wasn’t the only thing that was new from Slipknot, the band also decided to change the look of there masks to go more with the upgraded style of the new album. Slipknot has just recently finished their All Hope Is Gone tour that lasted a year. Now that the tour is over you will be able to see them perform in heavy metal concerts and festivals. Though there are still no set dates of when slipknots next performance will be you can bet it won’t be long for us to see them perform with ozzfest coming up so be on the look out.

From this we get one of the greatest psychedelic, acid rock bands of the 60′s. Known for their creative writing, and crazy stage performance from front man Jim Morrison, The Doors music lives on today. THe doors shared a short 8 year career with band members Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Kriger. One of the few things that set The Doors aside from all of the other bands around at the time, was that they did not use a bass guitar in their live shows. Ray played the bass lines with his left had on a newly invented piano bass, and played other keyboards with his right. They started playing shows and eventually became the house band for the Whiskey a Go Go , and were spotted by Electra on August 10th 1966. Shortly after being spotted they were signed with Electra on August 18th 1966. This was the beginning of an amazing journey for this unforgettable band. Shortly after the band was fired from The Whiskey, due to Jim’s extraverted performance of their song “The End” . In the live performance Jim Morrison goes into his own depiction of the Greek drama Oedipus Rex. In which Oedipus unknowingly kills his dad, and sleeps with his mother. This type of performance foreshadow the trouble Jim would later have with law enforcement, and himself. In march of 1969 while performing in Miami, Jim is accused of lewd, and perverse acts while on stage. This trouble followed him untill his death on July 3rd 1971. By this time the band had split up and Jim and his wife Pamela had moved to France. Jim’s drinking and constant drug abuse had driven the members to their wit’s end, and could no longer handle all of Jim’s antics. Even through their troublesome career The Doors managed to appeal to the millions selling over 32.5 millon albums in the U.S alone. Their smash hit “Light my Fire” sold one million copies, and reached #1 on billboard charts in July of 1969. To this day you still hear this song being played worldwide. Kids, as well as adults continue to buy albums and merchandise of The doors. And, on February 28, 2007 The Doors earned their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their music has stood the test of tim, and lives in the hearts and souls of music lovers worldwide.

With their wide variety of styles that have been incorporated into so many of the songs they recorded, it’s no wonder why they have such a broad fan base. Using and tapping into reggae, ska, dub, funk, rockabilly, and even rap, the appeal of this band is world-wide. In 1977 with their debut album “The Clash”, they brought their popularity to the U.S. This album became know as the best album of the 80′s, and kids continue to buy it today. With their political lyrics, and rebellious attitude they appealed to a young generation that was craving freedom from the establishment. The brought raw energy and new light on things that werent being expressed. Every song that was written had political agenda to expose the things that people werent awear of, or were looking the other way of. Joe Strummer said ” We are against ignorance” , this band came to make a statement, to leave their mark on the youth of that era, which they did, as well as influencing so many teens of today. You see kids walking down the street everyday wearing Clash t-shirts. Stores everywhere carry posters, blankets, and even baby clothes with this bands name. And, in 2003 this band got the recognition that is deserved, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Even though they were disbanded in early 1986, this bands legacy lives on today, as one of the greatest bands of all time.

Breaking through in the 90″s Nirvana became THE grunge band of the era. Coming together in 1989, and finally entering mainstream in 1991 with their hit single “Smells like Teen Spirit”. This song was played in every radio across the country, as it continues to play today. This became the anthem for teenages, for the outcasts, for those who wanted to rebel. Kurt Cobain became the spokesman, for a rebellious generation, and his songs were the prayers of those teens. They began to tour and their success grew as well as their popularity. A key factor to this was that their video was constantly played on MTV. In February of 1992 Cobain married Courtney Love of another popular grunge group known as Hole. She gave birth to their daughter Frances Bean Cobain. With all the fame and fortune that Nirvana was beginning to get from all the recognition from the media, Their album “Nevermind” sold 400,00 copies a week in 1991. That same album has sold 25 million copies in the us alone, and 50 million world-wide. The fame, although wanted by all the members, Cobain stated to resent it and withdraw. He began to use drugs heavily, including heroin. An intervention was held for him, and he agreed to go to rehab, only jump a wall less than a week later and fly back home where he was eventually found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This marked the end of Nirvana. Many have speculated Cobain’s death, and many more have their theories about what really happened that day on April 8th 1994. Even through the tragedy of a wonderful singer Nirvana’s popularity did not fade. They have continued to sell millions, and kids continue to play the music of the greatest grunge band to come out of Seattle. “Smells like Teen Spirit” will continue to appeal to the teens of american. They will keep looking for the perfect poster, the perfect article that makes them feel as one with this incredible band. The wave of impact that this band has left on teens today could never be erased. They have stood the test of time, and will continue to by coming into the hearts of so many that have yet to discover who NIrvana is. Girls and boys around the world pick up guitars, bass guitars, and drums eager to learn how to play the songs once preformed not so long ago by this amazing band. It goes to say that the memory of Nirvana will never die.
